The road tax (also called motorrijtuigenbelasting or mrb in Dutch) is a tax that almost every car owner in the Netherlands has to pay.
Road tax for electric cars from 2025
In 2025, you will receive a 75% discount. That means you only pay 25% of the regular road tax rate (the so-called "quarter rate"). The Dutch government plans to gradually phase out the discount for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles between 2026 and 2030.
Electric vehicles (EV)
In 2025, EVs get a 75% discount.
From 2026 to 2029, the discount will be 25%.
After that, starting in 2030, the full rate will apply (as things stand now).
Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV)
In 2025, PHEVs still get a 25% discount.
From January 1, 2026, the full road tax rate will apply.
What does this mean for your lease price?
This change will affect your monthly lease fee. From 2026 onwards, expect an average increase of €25 to €60 per month, depending on the weight of the car.
