• How much road tax do I have to pay for my electric car?

Road tax, officially known as motorrijtuigenbelasting (mrb), is a tax that nearly every vehicle owner in the Netherlands has to pay.

Road tax for electric cars from 2026

In 2025, you still received a 75% discount. The Dutch government plans to phase out the road tax discount for (plug-in hybrid) electric cars between 2026 and 2030.

    Electric vehicles (EVs)

In 2026, you’ll still get a 30% discount on the regular rate. That same discount is expected to apply in 2027 and 2028. In 2029, the discount drops to 25%. After that, you’ll pay the full rate (as far as we know now).

    Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs)

Driving a plug-in hybrid (PHEV)? From 1 January 2026, the road tax discount will be gone. You’ll then pay the regular rate.

  • What is road tax (HSB or MRB)?

If a vehicle is registered in your name, you are required to pay road tax. In the Netherlands, this is known as houderschapsbelasting (HSB) or motorrijtuigenbelasting (MRB). This tax helps the government maintain public roads.

As soon as the car is used on public roads, road tax must be paid. This is already included in your monthly lease price.

  • Does a change in road tax (motorrijtuigenbelasting) affect your monthly lease price?

Yes, it can. Every year on 1 January, the road tax rates may be adjusted. This is based on inflation correction and decisions made by the national and provincial governments. Provinces can add their own surcharge, called opcenten.

As a result, your monthly lease price may change once a year. Unfortunately, we have no control over this.

What affects the amount of road tax you pay?

    1. National and provincial politics.
Each province adds its own surcharge on top of the national road tax. This means the final rate differs per province.

    2. CO₂ emissions.
Cars that emit more CO₂ are taxed more.

    3. Fuel type.
Electric cars pay the lowest road tax. Then come petrol, LPG and natural gas, followed by diesel. The highest rates apply to older LPG systems and some alternative fuels.

    4. Empty weight of the car.
This is the weight of the car without passengers or luggage. You can find it in the vehicle registration under ‘massa ledig voertuig’.
