Road tax, officially known as motorrijtuigenbelasting (mrb), is a tax that nearly every vehicle owner in the Netherlands has to pay.
Road tax for electric cars from 2026
In 2025, you still received a 75% discount. The Dutch government plans to phase out the road tax discount for (plug-in hybrid) electric cars between 2026 and 2030.
Electric vehicles (EVs)
In 2026, you’ll still get a 30% discount on the regular rate. That same discount is expected to apply in 2027 and 2028. In 2029, the discount drops to 25%. After that, you’ll pay the full rate (as far as we know now).
Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs)
Driving a plug-in hybrid (PHEV)? From 1 January 2026, the road tax discount will be gone. You’ll then pay the regular rate.
